Shopping in Chetumal
No matter what you are looking for to buy, or how much money you would
like to spend, you are likely to be satisfied with your experience in
Chetumal, whether you are a long time resident, a new-comer, or a tourist.
Here are some examples of what is available.
Plaza Las Americas is an American style mall constructed and opened in 2002. It
has many stores, a food court, and a cineplex with several first-run movies,
many in English with Spanish subtitles.
The downtown area of Chetumal has many different stores and shops, many of which are located on the main street of Heroes. There are additional stores and specialty shops located nearby on side streets, as well as hotels and restaurants.
Chetumal, because the weather is never very cold, has many open-air markets where you can buy all types of articles as well as food. There is a New Market and an Old Market often used to help designate the location of a place. "It is near the New Market."
Just within the last 4-5 years, large wholesale stores found in every city in the US, have begun to spring up in Chetumal. For example, there is a Sam's Club and an Office Depot. There is also a Bodega Aurrera, owned by the American chain, Walmart.
Chetumal has a store for almost any kind of specialty item you could want. Among them are stores for restaurant, bar, and hotel supplies, craft supplies, locksmiths, fresh roasted coffee, plastics of all kinds, pet stores, sports and dance equipment stores, and hardware stores, just to mention a few.
The Commercial Free Zone is located about 7 miles (about 4.2 kilometers) south of Chetumal, in Belize, across the Rio Hondo River. Mexicans travel to the Zone regularly to buy goods and gasoline. There are also two hotels
and cansinos there providing gambling, nice restaurants, and floor shows for
their customers.
