The International House of the Writer of Bacalar was inaugurated in 1990 by the State Government of Quintana Roo. It has signed a cooperation agreement with the General Society of Writers of Mexico (SOGEM) and the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA).
The International House of the Writer is operated through the Ministry of Culture with the aim of providing a comfortable space to house writers, poets and creative artists in general in the region, in the country and abroad.
It is located in the town of Bacalar, a town of ancient Mayan roots,
and a block from the shores of the Seven Blues Lagoon. It is near the strong and
elegant colonial fort of the sixteenth century, Fort San Felipe,
which also houses the impressive Museum of the Fort of San Felipe.
The establishment has hosted important national and international events such as the First National Meeting of Writers of Cinema, the First National Meeting of Directors of Film, and the First International Meeting of Graduate Writers, as well as others.
For its enviable geographical location and its attractive surroundings, the House offers optimum conditions for carrying out artistic and cultural productions through exchange programs with various institutions and organizations for projects of production, dissemination, training, updating and research in various fields of culture.
Its beautiful gardens, the tranquility of the area were it is located, next to one of the most beautiful lakes in the country, combines an atmosphere of peacefulness and beauty in harmony with nature, and is conducive to creativity and inspiration.
It has five spacious and comfortable bungalows, each with rooms for two to four people, and the House can simultaneously accommodate up to forty people. Each bungalow has a lounge area and each bedroom has a private bath. Units with air-conditioning are available.
The main building has a lounge area, a conference room, a meeting room, library, reading room, canteen service, and direct access to the lake and parking.
There is also in the main building a small museum of Maya history, writing, and culture.
